Western Dressage Clinic

Saturday's Western Dressage Clinic at J-Six Ranch Equestrian Center presented by the Cochise Dressage and Eventing Association and featuring clinician Katherine Calkins brought together riders, horses and auditors with a wide range of experience and expectations - all wanting to know more about this emerging discipline.

How is Western Dressage different from modern "traditional" dressage? It honors the horse and values the partnership*. Western Dressage is truly American in accepting horse and rider as we are and encouraging us to be the best we can be.  Based on the precepts of traditional dressage - precision of training that improves fluidity, self awareness, obedience and confidence - dressage benefits any horse and rider whether going into battle, tackling the work in the cow pen or traveling safely down the trail.

Why are there "tests"?  Tests are used in dressage to evaluate the progress of the horse, the rider and the partnership.  In competition we may be used to "winning" but in dressage the true competition is ourselves.  While we may score higher than another horse and rider team at a show to win ribbons, our goal is to improve on the score of our last test and to move up to the next level.

Katherine Calkins has additional clinics scheduled and regular lesson groups focused on Western Dressage.  You can come watch the Cochise Dressage and Eventing Association show on May 5th to see what all the excitement is about!

See You Saturday!

Our next Gymkhana is April 6th. Events will be Cloverleaf Barrels, 2 Barrel Cowhorse, Turn and Burn, Pole Bending and Thread the Needle. Don’t forget – A non-perishable food donation will get you a free Time Only and if you are in 4-H we’ll waive your arena fee (but you have to tell us when you sign-in).

Also, we will have 4 day-stalls available for $5 each during all Fun Days and Gymkhanas. A place for your horse to relax and not be tied to the trailer during the day. First come – first served. No reservations. You supply the hay, we’ll supply the water.

AND - new Snack Bar items so you won't go hungry!

See you Saturday - you still have time to earn points in your division - and there's a division for everyone (and for every horse).  Great family atmosphere and fun if you're new at this.
